As founders of the classic U.S. rave progenitor Hardkiss alongside their sorely missed brother Scott Hardkiss, the pair have been mainstays in every aspect of dance music as producers, promoters, label heads, and world-class DJs.
Fast forward to 2014 and the lads are still at it, offering up their latest creation in the form of “RetroactiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump,” the second single from their forthcoming album 1991 which is due later this year. A slick slab of electro-boogie rhythms, the single features vocoded vox and a nasty bass that’ll take listeners on an interstellar voyage from Cybotron to Planet Rock.
A release such as this requires some serious thought when considering remixers, and Whiskey Pickle spared no expense. Having such industry luminaries as James Curd (of Greenskeepers fame) and Q-Burns Abstract Message, as well as Gavin Hardkiss’ own Hawke moniker on board has proved to be essential in creating the total package. Each remixer finds a perfect, complimentary vibe to the original; whether it’s the glossy, disco-funk of the James Curd version, or the relentless 808 bass and layered breaks on the Q-Burns Abstract Message treatment … or maybe it’s the retro, balearic vibe of the Hawke remix that does the trick? Whatever the occasion, Whiskey Pickle has the correct medicine to ease any afflictions.

For its final offering of 2013 Whiskey Pickle Records is proud to present the second release from Austin’s own rising star of house music, Abstrakt Audio (the ‘nom de plume’ of one Fern Argüello). Producing since the age of 15, starting with a Roland TR–909 and a banged-up Juno–60 synthesizer, Fern has always been drawn to the sounds of ’80s boogie and Italo disco thanks to his father’s hip record collection. Previously, Fern was a part of production duo Retrovox with Rey Aguilar, releasing a number of tracks for PBR Recordings and playing shows and festivals all over Texas and Mexico. His latest project, Abstrakt Audio, soldiers on with “Back 2 Basics”, a dance floor monster of Kraken proportions, unleashed from the murky depths and sure to wreak havoc from coast to coast. A root-chakra-rumbling organ bass line carries the tune over garage-influenced rhythms while dubby vocals punctuate its deep pads. The single is then rounded out by a trio of fine, equally monstrous remixes. Remixer du jours Vanilla Ace and Donny Bravo twist the original into a beautifully melancholy masterpiece that ebbs and flows around sparkling beats and filtered chords. Austin’s up-and-coming mystery duo Eagle Mountain take a classic ’90s flip on the track and jack it up with all manner of vintage percussion and throwback flavors. Another fellow Austinite, Robert Roman, minces the original into tiny bits with his sparse and brooding version, amplifying its deep leanings and taking the listener 10,000 leagues below.

Whiskey Pickle Records is proud to present the debut release of Austin’s own S&M Music Company, comprised of musician DJs Samantha Garrett and Michael Zawodniak (AKA Iron Mike). Individually, Sam moonlights as Cap’n Tits and wields a wicked axe as the front lady for local dance quartet Whiite Walls, while Mike is a founding member of the Flying Turns DJ Crew as well as keyboardist for the live incarnation of celestial power-popsters Orthy. Their pairing grew from the monthly Deep Cuts party which features the duo waist high in vinyl stacks with their extended back-to-back DJ sets of sleazy disco and uplifting house. From this connection it was only natural for Sam and Mike to hit the studio and this single is the tasty result.
“Walk Away” is a slow burner that features Sam on vox and guitar while Mike lays down the keyboards, the bottom end, and offers his production talents. A stripped down bass and drum groove sets the frame work as chords build to a psychedelic boiling point with Sam’s echoed vocals bouncing around in a cavern of reverb. On the remix tip, Torontonian disco wizard Cyclist steps up to bat first and knocks it out of the park with his party-jam version while Austin native Ian Orth, flying solo as Orthy, takes the groove to lower BPMs with a brooding and hypnotic remix.

A distant year and the Planet Earth is dangerously overpopulated, land is scarce … food, scarcer. An elite team of horticulturalists has been deployed to the planets of Vesta, Juno, Ceres, and Pallas to supplement our earthly needs for sustenance. Every good mission needs a soundtrack and one man has been selected to orchestrate that soundtrack, that man is known across the land simply as Schugar from the San Diego quadrant. His very own Infusion Project, a collective that develops and empowers artists to be artists for a living, has proven itself more necessary than ever before, qualifying him as the perfect audio life force for such matters. Whiskey Pickle Records heads for the sky with their first international signing: Sydney, Australia’s The Owl & Finch. The Keep It Up EP is the debut artist release from this pair of high-flying, disco aficionados and is anything but ‘for the birds.’ With several cuts on Dave Allison’s Editorial Records, The Owl has topped the disco charts of Traxsource and Stompy with his solo re-edit work. Here he offers his precise engineering skills to the equation, while Finch supplies the live bass and guitar grooves in “Keep It Up,” a summertime, dance floor blazer that’s sure to earn spins from their native homelands to the shores of Ibiza. The b-side, “Found Another,” features somber, melancholic piano stabs and soulful, lamenting vocal hooks with an undeniably Balearic bass line.
Handling the remixes are Whiskey Pickle regulars Johnny Blackouts, Zack Highwire, andRiCHARD.GEAR. Johnny’s Found a MILF version twists the island vibes into an epic, acidic dub odyssey, perfect for that rude awakening at sunrise by the sea-donkey you thought was a mermaid. RiCHARD.GEAR takes the titular tune into Italo territories of synthesizer madness while the Highwire version of “Keep It Up” is a tense, percussive breakbeat affair. The accompanying Highwire remix of “Found Another” finds the tune plunged into deep, moody realms with a brooding bass line that’s gonna rattle cabinets and keep dancing feet on the floors.

Whiskey Pickle heralds its tenth release with the debut EP from Zack Highwire, a DJ/producer based in Austin, TX via Minnesota’s twin cities. With so many extraterrestrial vibes present on the Heartline Fractures EP one might have to wonder about Zack Highwire’s true origins. Could this simply be a stellar (pun intended) debut from a talented northerner living in Texas, or did a heart broken Star-Man fall to our tiny blue planet in search of solace and studio time to craft the perfect, cosmic break-up record? Whiskey Pickle’s not gonna say it was aliens … but, it was aliens.
The Heartline Fractures EP opens with the otherworldly arpeggios and hypnotic, percussive melodies of “By Them,” a tune that could perfectly soundtrack intergalactic SETI explorations with its supernova of sound. “Mind, Hearts, Lies” is a detour through a black hole as ominous chords prepare the listener for an acidic, breakbeat breakdown. Flip it over to get another deep space voyage in the form of “Surface Love” where psychedelic Italo stylings conjure visions of land speeders cruising the valleys and ruins of Mars. Rounding out the EP, one finds Mr. Highwire’s version of a peak time banger, “Does She Want You Now?,” featuring a brutal kick / bass combo that roots feet to the dance floor while vocoded pads lift the listener up to the stars.

Whiskey Pickle heads back to its housier roots with the label’s second artist EP from Fresno, California’s mover and shaker Steve Perez, aka P-Rez. Bounce House, Blunted Funk, and Not So Fast Records (which he manages) have all found a place for P-Rez’s funky, quirky house music sound. The Shits & Giggles EP, a follow up release to 2009’s, Valley Fever EP on Whiskey Pickle, features four jackin’ house offerings coupled with cheeky vocal samples and squelchy synth sounds. The door opens with “Hit It” and its bubbling 808 bass line and sparkly percussion, lending a nice framework for hypnotic, dubby stabs and instructions for lunacy. “So Hot!” gets groovy with syncopated rhythms and a cameo from everyone’s favorite, Agrestic “Ball-Buster” Celia. Whiskey Pickle Records is beyond stoked to present the debut EP from Texas’ own cosmic-funksters The New Black. This slick production duo, comprised of Nathan Stewart and William Bowers, have a combined resume that includes releases on Kolour Recordings, residencies at the legendary Houston club night Dedicated, and support duties for the likes of Inland Knights, Fred Everything, and Chris Lum. The1,000 Little Black Dresses EP kicks off with the filtered funk stomp of “Stone Cold Groove,” which combines a soulful, earthly bass and a horn sample that unfolds under heavenly pads, leads, and arpeggios. Clocking in at just over a year since his last release, native Austinite and Whiskey Pickle label managerRiCHARD.GEAR drops a slice of blissed-out space disco mixed with a housier stomp in “A Feelin’”. The cut features a hot, almost ‘Yacht Rock-ish’ guitar loop and a rolling bass line over a four-on-the-floor rhythm, confidently chugging along before diving head first into a deep, filtered breakdown that builds to a spiraling, arpeggiated crescendo. The remixes are stacked high with additional Austin-based talent to round out the package. Up first, Off Da Clock increases the energy by flipping and chopping samples into rhythmic oblivion over a thick, popping bass line. On the flip side, Andres Aguirre goes the cosmic route, gracing the listener with a groovy, mid-tempo version that warps the original into the perfect soundtrack for an opium den discotheque. Whiskey Pickle stalwart Daniel Allen then wraps up the release with a trippy excursion into psychedelic breakbeats that seems to filter Meat Beat Manifesto through the label’s sonic lens.
